RIP Peter Falk.

So much more than just Columbo, one of America’s finest actors has passed away at 83. Though certainly he will always be remembered as his long running detective character, playing Columbo from 1968-1983, Falk was also a brilliant and central member of John Cassavetes’s acting company. In 1970’s HUSBANDS and 1974’s A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, Falk became one of the greatest interpreters of Cassavetes’s jaundiced view of the American male. In the 80s he also made two memorable performances in Wenders’s  WINGS OF DESIRE and one of my very favorite films from childhood, THE PRINCESS BRIDE. They amounted to little more than cameos, or rather they would have had it not been for the indelible presence of Falk himself. See a fantastic clip from the beginning of HUSBANDS below. RIP.
